  • Create a floor plan of new home for furniture placement to determine what to take with you
  • Sell, donate or plan a yard sale for unnecessary belongings
  • Make a final moving home inventory
  • Start a file of moving paper work and expense to max on tax credits and claims if any
  • Get estimates and guarantees from moving companies or truck rental agencies or storage, if necessary and choose one
  • Get packing materials: paper, bubble wrap, packing tape and other supplies

1 Month Prior

Schedule all utility disconnections from existing address and connections to new address

Schedule upon move-out date of home

  • Carpet cleaning
  • Drapery cleaning

  • insurance company for moving coverage and transfer policy to new address
  • vehicle registration and licensing agency
  • housecleaning service
  • lawyer of property conveyance
  • finance companies
  • credit cards
  • library
  • magazine and newspaper subscriptions
  • doctor
  • dentist
  • pharmacist
  • employer, clubs and associations
  • kids schools
  • Canada Revenue Agency
  • non-government health plan

1 Week Prior

Verify

  • With your mover date and time of packing and move or if you are moving yourself confirm rental of moving truck and help of friends or moving team

Pack

  • Home contents
  • Travel kit and “last load” box for items you need immediately at the destination and put in car on moving date
  • Check book, credit card, cash
  • Passport, birth certificates, ID
  • Keys
  • Flashlight
  • Tools
  • Baby items such as diapers, stroller, car seat, medications, clothing
  • Kids items such as toys, medications, books, clothing
  • Kitchen items such as dishes, utensils, food
  • Personal items such as bedding, clothing, toiletries, medicines, bandages
  • Cell phone and charger
  • Vacuum, broom, garbage bags, rags/wipes
